The Kit Cat Klock: A Timeless American Icon

The Kit Cat Klock is a beloved and iconic American timepiece that has captured the hearts of generations. Designed in 1932 during the Great Depression, this uniquely animated pendulum clock was the brainchild of designer Earl Arnault, who sought to bring joy and whimsy to a time of hardship.

The story of the Kit Cat Klock begins in Oregon, where the Allied Clock Company was founded to manufacture these delightful clocks. The earliest models, produced in 1932, featured metal bodies, metal clock hands, and four toes on each paw. These early clocks had no markings on the back and required a starter knob or aperture to set the motor spinning in the correct direction.

As the decades passed, the Kit Cat Klock underwent a few subtle design changes, including the addition of the top paws and a dapper bow tie. By the 1950s, the Kit Cat had become synonymous with the era, its popularity soaring across America.

In 1962, the company relocated to Southern California, where it was renamed the California Clock Company. In 1982, the company was taken over by Woody Young, an Ohio native and serial entrepreneur, who was determined to keep the Kit Cat Klock tradition alive.

However, the Kit Cat's American-made legacy was nearly lost in the late 1980s, as the manufacturing of electric motors shifted overseas. Facing a lack of US-based suppliers, the California Clock Company developed a new battery technology to power the Kit Cat's iconic "one-second" animation.

Through the 1990s and into the new millennium, the Kit Cat Klock continued to evolve, with the introduction of limited-edition color variations and the charming Kitty Cat Klock. In 2001, the Lady Kit Cat Klock made her debut, adding a touch of femininity with her pearls and eyelashes.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2007, the Kit Cat Klock embarked on the "Great All American Road Show," a 75-day journey along Route 66, featuring the world's largest Kit Cat Klock and a specially painted 75-year-old Ford Deuce.

Today, over 85 years after its creation, the Kit Cat Klock remains a beloved and iconic American product, sold in stores around the world. In fact, it is estimated that a Kit Cat Klock is purchased every 3 minutes, a testament to its timeless appeal.

Measuring 15.5 inches from ears to tail, the Classic Black Kit Cat Klock is the original size, featuring the famous rolling eyes, wagging tail, and contagious smile that have made it an enduring symbol of American ingenuity and whimsy.
